“Birzu alus” – one of the oldest breweries in Lithuania, established in 1686 by Liudvika Karolina Radvilaite. Since these old times it is obvious that the beer in Birzai is really very good. The label of “Bavarijos” beer, which was produced in counts Tiskeviciai brewery is now being displayed in the “Sela” museum. It shows that this sort of beer was awarded several times in Germany, the homeland of beer.
When governments were changing the brewery was destroyed and rebuilt again, till finally in 1996 it was reorganized into the independent company, which regained its original name “Birzu alus”.
Since May 2004 the new stage has been started in the brewery. Today mash is being fermented in closed cylindrical vessels what gives more possibilities to improve the quality of beer. Also, in 2004 the new Czech drought equipment was installed, so we can offer our beer in various capacities: from 0, 5ltr to 5ltr.
Though nowadays we use the latest technologies to produce high quality beer, we still keep former traditions: the beer is being matured in old cold basements. Then matured beer is clarified and after that poured into bottles. Scalded beer is poured into plastic bottles whereas not scalded beer is poured into barrels. All beer types have saved the best beer production traditions typical to the North of Lithuania.
On the occasion of 320th anniversary, which our brewery celebrated in 2006, the new “1686 Jubiliejinis” 7% volume beer was released. The same year this exceptional beer was announced as the Product of the Year and got the gold medal. The award was given by the President Valdas Adamkus. “1686 Jubiliejinis” has original taste and is poured into 1 ltr glass bottles, brought from Germany specially for this beer.
During the reconstruction of the brewery, the old cellar was found which, probably, could have been set in approximately 1882. In 2004 the cellar was renewed and now the tasting hall for tourists is installed here.
